The Dead Sea Scrolls and Their World (Spring 2021)
Integrating text analysis, archaeology, and the technological tools of the 21st century, we’ll explore the meaning of the Scrolls within their own time as well as ours. We’ll visit Judea of 2000 years ago to discover the world of the Scrolls: the ideas, the people, and places that produced them. We’ll chronicle the story of the Scrolls ‘discovery in both the 20th and 21st centuries, including the latest finds from the ‘Cave of Horror’ as well as the revival of the ‘Shapira Manuscripts’ controversy. From there we’ll focus on a survey of the key Dead Sea Scroll texts, both Biblical and sectarian, all in English translation. In the process, we’ll realize the profound impact of the Scrolls on the emergence of both rabbinic Judaism and Christianity, a heritage that lives with us to this day.
