Piyut: Sephardic Jewish Liturgical Music – Spring 2020
“Piyut is a chain of tradition of Jewish culture on every level. It is the melody of the heart and the longing for all of the good that lies within the Jewish world and its many communities” -Professor Ephraim Hazan, Bar Ilan University. Join us for an exploration of the enchanting world of Sephardic Piyut. Piyutim are Jewish liturgical poems, written in Hebrew and sung in prayer, at lifecycle events and at Jewish communal gatherings and celebrations. In this course, we will learn to sing piyutim from different lifecycle events, while examining the texts of these poems from Morocco, Yemen, Iraq and Spain with Rabbi Tsipi Gabbai as our guide. Please note that Kehillah Community Synagogue is a SCENT-FREE community, and kindly requests that all participants refrain from wearing fragrances in the building.
