Jewish Magic: Sorcery, Spells, and Illusion (Winter 2021)
After two centuries of modern disenchantment, magic is more popular than ever today. Witchcraft, shamanism, and divination appeal to those seeking embodied, anti-authoritarian spiritual practices that both cater to our moment’s DIY ethos and enable a reclamation of spiritual power by many who have been disenfranchised from more mainstream religious institutions. But is there such a thing as Jewish magic?! The many Jewish magical recipe books that span two millennia and several Jewish vernaculars—Aramaic, Arabic, Yiddish, and Hebrew—answer this question with an emphatic yes. In this five-part course, we will encounter the past and present of Jewish magic through studying magical texts, artifacts, practices, and history. We will strive to explore this mysterious terrain through a balance of wonder, critical-analysis, and conversation. If you’ve been wanting to learn more about spirituality, Jewish history, or the occult, from a scholarly and experiential perspective, please consider joining.
