Beyond the Torah: The Babylonian Exile (Summer 2021)
This summer, we will study the tragic exile of the Jewish people from their land in 586 BCE. But we will also look at the realities of life in Babylonia for Jews and non- Jews alike through Biblical and other ancient Near Eastern texts, archaeological realia, and the latest theories of scholars.
While mourning for Zion, its Temple, and its Davidic monarchy, Jews there also built a vibrant and transformed religious community. The surprising end of the Babylonian Empire at the hands of Persia after a half-century was by no means the end of the Babylonian Jewish community.
Many Jews returned to Jerusalem…but even more chose to continue their lives in the diaspora. We’ll explore the complexity of these decisions by our ancestors. Above all, we will examine how Judaism was forever changed by the Exile, and how the experience of Exile transformed Israel into an eternal people. Have a Jewish Bible (Tanakh) handy.
