Beyond the Torah: Isaiah: The Suffering Servant (Winter 2021)

This winter, we continue our study of the prophet Isaiah and his book. Israel’s prophets were rarely silent about the suffering of God’s people. In the chapters we’ll be studying, Isaiah reminds his people of the reasons for their exile to Babylonia, but preaches a message of restoration and ultimate triumph. He foresees the triumph of the far more tolerant Persian Empire over Babylon and asserts that this is the work of Israel’s G-d. Central to the Divine plan for Israel is a figure described as the Suffering Servant. Only through His Servant will G-d provide redemption for Israel.

The central question is:

“Who is the Suffering Servant?”

Is it Isaiah himself?

Or perhaps a Jewish contemporary of his?

Could it be Israel as an entire people?

This is not a weekly “Torah-study” class, but an in-depth exploration of each chapter and verse, uncovering the religious, historic, and cultural messages of the author, and the historical context of the book’s composition and its first audiences. We will read and study in English with occasional references to the original Hebrew (fully explained for non-Hebrew speakers). Class members will be expected to read a chapter or so each week in preparation for class discussions.
