Advanced Biblical Hebrew 3 – Winter 2020

The Book of Amos: A Play in Three Acts. In many respects, Amos represents the dawn of classical prophecy. Speaking out on themes of pure observance of the faith, social justice, the abuses of the wealthy and other topics, Amos sets a standard and a style that will be emulated by the likes of Isaiah and Jeremiah in later centuries. In his recently published commentary on this book, Goran Eidevall analyzes the text through the lens of literary rather than source/historical criticism and see the book as a kind of three-part drama which may also possess tragic and comedic components. We’ll explore his ideas and translate key texts from Amos to decide for ourselves. This course will be available to registered students at no extra charge via Zoom online conference services. Students may attend live in the classroom, live online or anytime via recording.
