A Writers Voice: The Art of Personal Narrative (Spring 2021)
“But he [Lorca] gave me permission to find a voice, to locate a voice, that is to locate a self, a self that is not fixed, a self that struggles for its own existence.” — Leonard CohenEveryone has a story they want to tell. But how do we transmute the raw material of our experiences and insights into writing composed with meaning and authenticity? And how do we find a voice that is true to the tale we want to tell?
This writing workshop explores personal narrative as a means to express, memorialize, question, and uncover our experience and identity in their diverse, often contradictory manifestations. People drawn to writing memoir, fiction, or personal essays are welcome.
We will explore the craft of personal narrative through writing exercises focused on developing an authentic voice and practicing narrative strategies as exemplified in readings of predominantly Jewish authors. Together, we will explore the possibilities of writing as a self-composing process of discovery and inquiry. The course will offer eight, 90-minute Zoom sessions in a workshop format featuring discussion, writing exercises, and breakout groups to share and review our work. Participants are invited to complete an 8-10 page project (vignette, essay, chapter, story) exploring some facet of their personal history or the impact of their Jewish identity, experience, or studies on their lives.
The educator will meet each student individually for a half-hour Zoom conference to review course work and/or the optional long project.
