Rabbi Ruth Adar Joins HaMaqom | The Place as Executive Director
A veteran Jewish educator and beloved rabbi, Adar brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for advancing the organization’s mission of creating inclusive communities through Jewish learning and practice.
Berkely, CA – March 17, 2021 – HaMaqom | The Place, formerly Lehrhaus Judaica, has hired Rabbi Ruth Adar to lead the organization as Executive Director, beginning on March 17, 2021. Rabbi Adar brings her experience as a lecturer, teacher, and community organizer to HaMaqom. She is a testament to what HaMaqom was established to do: advance life-long Jewish learning and develop the next generation of Jewish leaders. Rabbi Adar began her own studies with HaMaqom (then Lehrhaus) in 1995, studies that inspired her to become an ordained rabbi in the Reform movement in 2008. She has been an exceptionally effective HaMaqom teacher since 2009 and is particularly well-known for her “Introduction to the Jewish Experience” series of classes A member of HaMaqom’s board since 2012, Rabbi Adar will succeed Rabbi Darren Kleinberg and transition from her role on the board into the role of Executive Director.
Rabbi Adar was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles, with a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters, in 2006. She completed a Master of Arts in Religious Studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School. She also received her Master and Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Minor in History and Education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Prior to coming to the Bay Area, Ruth was the Assistant Rabbi at Congregation Ner Tamid in Las Vegas from 2008 to 2010. She continues to be a Spiritual Leader for Temple Beth Solomon of the Deaf in Tarzana, CA, leading services, visiting congregants in hospitals and nursing homes, and leading pastoral counseling. Many in the Bay Area know her best as the “Coffee Shop Rabbi,” a program she started in 2008 to reach out to non-affiliated Jews.

Rabbi Adar will lead HaMaqom’s exemplary staff, act as the organization’s lead fundraiser and continue to teach the Introduction to Judaism classes that are close to her heart.
