I get this question all the time: why learn Prayerbook/Biblical Hebrew?
Great question, long answer, but I’ll try to keep this short. When going to services, it’s nice to be able to follow where you are in the Prayerbook. It’s even better when you can actually understand (and take to heart) what the prayers and blessings are saying. Over the years, my students have told me how surprised they were that the English translation of the Hebrew in the Prayerbook often doesn’t match what the Hebrew is really saying.
The same is true for the Hebrew Bible. When you take control of reading and understanding the text yourself, you open the door to the very foundation of Jewish identity as well as one of the treasures of modern Western literature and faith.
So why learn Prayerbook/Biblical Hebrew? Because it is an essential piece of who you are, just waiting to be discovered.
